Web Development With SEO
January 17th, 2012Building a great website around SEO is important to any business wishing to be found in search engine results. There are multiple ways we can incorporate web development with SEO. Making navigation through you website search engine friendly is just one way your website can increase rankings. Using content that is easy for “crawlers” to look through and designing images that are search engine friendly are also ways your website can be found at the top of search engine results.
Avoiding using Flash on your website is essential to being found on search engines. Flash makes it very difficult for crawlers to read your content. JavaScript can give your website all the fancy effects that Flash can, but it is easier for search engine crawlers to read and index the information.
Use specific keywords for pages, and then use those keywords inside the posts on those pages. Search engines index information based on the keywords that are used and the content of the pages those keywords are found in. Headers, content, and links used should all have specific keywords. Using specific keywords for each page makes it easier for search engines to read and gives you more keywords that people can search for in the long run.
Images are also very important to your website. Not only do images give your websites eye appeal for your visitors, but they also give you a chance to put the SEO process into play. Your alt attributes for the images should contain the keyword for the page that it is being put into. Search engines use the alt attribute to index that image into their results.
Web development with SEO can be easy if you follow these guidelines along the way. Use search engine friendly techniques and your website can be at the top of the search results and gaining click-through traffic in no time.
Managing Web development, can age you by 50 years.
January 12th, 2012
2012 is a new year on my calendar. The same calendar I use to help me manage multiple web development projects tells me new budgets will be created for web development. This change in the year made me think back to 1997 when I opened up a HTML editor for the first time and found it amazing to just put in “Hello World” and see it appear publicly through a browser. Yes, the simple things in life can make you feel giddy in 1997 or 2012. Putting text on a page in the 90′s was simple, straight forward and made testing pretty much a no brainer. Then, the powers at be came out with this thing called 3-tiered architecture. It involved a non code related entity called a database which is organized into a data layer with scripting languages creating dynamic movement rendered through the browser. Is your head spinning yet? And how does a browser show stuff from one of these databases?
You are correct. Something more complicated beyond HTML was introduced. Scripting languages like CGI, PHP, J2EE, ASP and then .NET and currently weird stuff called Ruby on Rails and Python have come on the scene. Python? OK, lets get back to the subject here. Let us just say that web development went from simple text development to dynamic text and content creation to social interactions between users and other computers and buying products online on secure sites. The word dynamic site development is now the norm.
Due to these complicated layers we now need specialists. Someone needs to still code that HTML to show the materials. It is what we can view with our browser. Then we have to add script writers who have to master their chosen code base like PHP. They connect HTML to the database via scripts or for the really advanced, object oriented programming (OOP). In my 10 years of managing developers, I have found it hard to find an expert HTML and CSS developers who also have mastered something like PHP. You need two people. But, what about that database? Well, we have seen developers setup the database themselves. Creating tables and normalizing data. This is not an article about databases . . . let us ignore these terms for now. Let’s just say that a developer can figure out how to setup a database. However, in order to have one support thousands of users and massive amounts of data a database administrator or DBA is needed. A DBA tries to figure out how to make a database better. Moving data around the system, finding bottlenecks and supporting developers with setting up what they need.
The personnel picture to create a modern website is starting to be more complicated. You have multiple specialists who need to work as one. They need a strategy, blue print and schedule. Here enters the project manager.
This project manager must understand at least parts of the technology utilized. Team members will have more respect for this individual and enable cohesive discussions on strategy, risk management reviews and keeping the overall project on track. A project manager must also translate technology terms and methods to an end client or account executive. This gear switch is something that can not be taught. Only experience creates this “switch” ability. It is also a personality trait that understands the audience perspectives and their needs naturally. A good project manager will quickly discern a client only caring about budget burn rates and if the darn site will launch on time. They might totally ignore design or how the site was built. Only a few of our clients want to look under the hood to see what engine is in there.
Going into yet another direction a project manager is challenged with gathering requirements. What should be built? How complex should all of these layers be to answer to a business model? Ecommerce sites with social integration can be very complex. How will this type of project be managed? We have approaches called Agile or Scrum, Systems development life-cycle or SDLC and then good old ad hoc or just close your eyes and code. In our next articles we are going to dive into each of these approaches. When do we use a hard lined water fall schedule or setup a more iterative approach that can withstand change? It will be an interesting journey following these many paths. Strap yourself in and be ready.
